Summary of the Process
1. Deep clean, degrease and wet sand all cabinet surfaces (doors/drawers/base cabinetry) to promote adhesion.
2. Remove cabinet doors, drawers and all hardware. These are taken off-site for prep and finishing.
3. Apply caulking as necessary to base frame seams and joints to achieve a uniform coated surface.
4. Apply epoxy-based filler (tougher than wood!) to any holes / dents.
5. Spray (off-site) a coat of premium, extreme-bonding primer followed by light sand.
6. Spray (off-site) a coat of industrial wood finish followed by a light sand to promote adhesion between coats.
7. Spray (off-site) a coat of industrial wood finish. In some instances (lighter colors), we may apply a 3rd coat for the extra wood grain hiding.
8. Base cabinet frames are prepped onsite for spray (tape/plastic) and undergo the same process as the doors (all finishes look identical). We do not brush and roll the frames.
9. We only prep / spray what we can finish that day. We remove all plastic/paper at the end of the day so your kitchen is usable during the process.
10. Re-install all drawers, cabinet doors and hardware. In many cases, we can help you upgrade to soft-close hinges at a greatly reduced price.
11. Enjoy the updated look of your cabinets!
What’s an Industrial Wood Finish?
Most cabinet refinishing contractors use a high-quality trim paint. While these are quality products, they are designed for trim / doors / windows - not the demands of a kitchen. No cabinet manufacturer uses trim paint to finish their products. They use a product in the industrial wood finish category - typically a tinted polyurethane with added hardeners designed to withstand abrasion and a variety of chemicals (oils / acids / cleaning products). These products are usually not sold in consumer paint stores and require additional knowledge and training to apply successfully. However, they deliver a beautiful finish and exceptional durability when applied in the manner they were designed.
For most kitchens, the process takes less than a week. We are only onsite typically 2 days. Cabinet doors/drawers are painted at our offsite spray shop. We're looking forward to talking with you about your project.
